Netball Report

Kaniere Ferns lose again!

On Saturday 18 May Kaniere Ferns and St Maris Diamonds warmed upon the netball courts at the WHS for the second game of the season.

Although it was a glacial morning the crowd on the sidelines kept expanding throughout the display, all trying to get into a good space to survey the show.

The gathered crowd held their breath for most of the game as it was very close. But sadly Kaniere Ferns lost with a score of 5-8.

Hermit Crabs

Definition

Hermit crabs are not like most crabs because most crabs don’t change shells like a hermit crab does. A hermit crab is a speedy creature when near the water. They are also invertebrates and are nocturnal, but they still move around during the day because hermit crabs only sleep for a couple of hours. Hermit crabs use their first pair of legs for walking around and the other legs are for keeping their shell on. Hermit crabs are a crustacean too.

Appearance

Hermit crab’s natural colour is always a mix of orange, green, yellow, white, brown, black, blue and red. When Hermit crabs change shells you may think it is a shrimp but it isn’t, it’s a Hermit crab out of its shell. Hermit crabs grow up to 10cm long but the ones you commonly see are 10mm long.

Behaviour

Hermit crabs search everyday of their lives for new shells. When Hermit crabs mate they must be in a natural enviroment.  to breed and only breed during the night. If not they will join shells.

Diet

Often when hermit crabs are a pet or being looked after mainly eat fruit, vegetables and any type of cereal.

But when they are in the wild they eat octopus brains and washed up fish.

Dangers

One of the hermit crab’s dangers is water pollution because if rubbish gets in to the tide pools then the hermit crabs die out because their home is polluted. Another danger is the changing tide pools, because they could get swept away by the sea.

Opinion

Our opinion is that hermit crabs are a fascinating creature because they switch shells all the time.

Autumn

Freshly mowed grass is a fluffy carpet spreading in front of me.

Chipping bark is a curling caterpillar.

Moss is a sponge waiting to be dried out.

Damp spider webs are ropes swinging from afar.

As rainbow coloured leaves trickle to the shriving ground.

Willow Hut Photos

Over the last two weeks we learnt how to make a hut from willow branches. Thanks to Maire her designer friend Michelle and Kim for all the help they gave us. We can't wait until spring comes and the willow sprouts to cover our hut in leaves.
